LIGHT & SPACE INTERIOR DESIGN
Beautiful Contemporary Sustainable
BACKGROUND

Thank you for taking the time to visit my site. My name is Rachel Macfarlane-Grieve. I am a British Interior Designer with a Diploma in Interior Design from the leading KLC Design College in Chelsea, London, and am experienced to take on any residential project, big or small.
I have benefited from living in many countries, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, France and the US, and have been inspired by interesting design specifics from all over the world, which I try to incorporate into my designs wherever possible. Having rented houses and apartments in the above countries, I know how
important it is to make a house a
home, swiftly and
on a budget. After my time spent
traveling, I am now based in Walton On Thames, Surrey. My
style is an eclectic mix of
Industrial, Scandi and Mid
Century, but I can work to any preferred style.
I am a huge advocate for sustainability and will try to incorporate pieces you
already have in your home, as much as possible, by encouraging upcycling or simply repositioning. I love to source furniture in need of a new home, on websites such as Vinterior or Gumtree. I also believe that light is fundamental to a good design, clever lighting can make a space feel airy, warm, cosy, intimate, interesting, whatever you're after.
I offer a simple service of design, from a quick fix up, to a
complete overhaul, all can be done remotely saving you time and
money over traditional interior design services. On the featured project below, I explain my reasoning behind the decisions that I took. These will obviously vary from project to project.

PROJECTS
KITCHEN AND PANTRY
This was an ex display kitchen I sourced which came complete, but it wasn't quite big enough for the large space we had to work with. The answer was an open pantry connected to the kitchen which was able to house the groceries, as well as countertops for the toaster, blender etc keeping the kitchen clutter free. This was achieved at a fraction of the cost of buying more units.
STUDY NOOK
This Study Nook was created in the main Living Area so the whole family could work with ease, without disturbing anyone working in the main study. It's so important to have separate areas these days, with so many of us working from home. This innovative design adds interest to the space, especially when the door is left ajar giving you just a peak! The mid century Ekornes chair was a fabulous find on a local website.
PICTURE WINDOW
This picture window is the perfect place for a coffee, overlooking the garden. The window allows the light to stream into the room, yet is a much cosier option than a set of doors. It also doubles up beautifully as extra seating for parties.
OTHER SPACES
Simple Transformations
BEDROOM
This bedroom was a quick and easy fix. The window was awkward to dress without losing too much light, so a simple roman blind was the best option here. The trunk was a family antique that was made into a useful side table. Built in wardrobes and drawers that had gone orange with age, were repainted and given new handles. Sustainable and good for the budget.
SMALL DETAILS
Good Interior Design comes from looking at the small details too. I like to add texture which may include natural grasses, plants, metals, ceramics, wood, different fabrics and faux furs. This layering gives a space depth and contrast.
ART
Artwork has a huge role to play in a design. I love painting abstract and seascapes, and did these two bespoke pieces with the colours from the room in mind. You can see more of my designs on Instagram at home_art_space or email me here for a chat about size and colour. Art ranges from £80-£300 depending on size

Space and light and order. Those are the things that we need as much as we need bread or a place to sleep.

Services

My pricing is £40 per hour. If it's just a few tweaks you need to bring a room together, this can usually be done in a couple of hours. The first consultation is free, and most work can be done via Facetime/email, as long as you are are happy to take the room measurements! I will then email you a form to find out about the space, and your likes and dislikes. For a full room makeover, I will send you a room plan with the furniture in place, and photos and prices of all the furniture I suggest. For an average size bedroom or living room my services typically costs £300-£350. There is a discount for a second room, and I am happy to share any trade discounts I receive from
suppliers.

TESTIMONIALS
Former Clients
Rachel listened carefully to my tastes and ideas, then guided me through to themes. She suggested lowering the kitchen window which has made a huge impact on the space. Also by adding the booth seating, we have a much better flow. Rachel also did a lovely seascape for us which brought in all the complementary colours.
Heather B. Herne Bay
I asked Rachel to help with my living and dining rooms. She suggested a modern fireplace to give the Living Room a focal point. We also blocked up a pointless door, that we have turned into some feature shelves adding interest. We saved money by repainting some old cabinets that we were going to replace. She also made my home office into an inviting space that makes my work day a lot more pleasant!
Joanne S. Walton On Thames
We now have 3 pieces of artwork painted by Rachel. She makes sure she knows exactly which colours we have used in our rooms, so she can incorporate some into the painting, allowing them to sit well within our surroundings. We are very happy with the result.
